June 7, 2024 NASA awarded Space Lab® a Phase I for research and development of the "ECOMINE KREEP Bioregenerative Rare Earth Element Mining from Lunar Mare Regolith" project under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The team includes Principal Investigator Christine Escobar, Principal Engineer Adam Escobar, Mechanical Engineer Madison Jones, Post Doctoral Research Assistant Pamela Flores, and Colorado School of Mines (Dr. Jaeheon Lee). March 26, 2024 NASA awarded Space Lab® one of the three investigations under the Artemis III Deployed Instruments (A3DI) for the "LEAF β - Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora Beta". LEAF β involves a standalone payload on the surface of the Moon that will be the first experiment to observe plant photosynthesis, growth, and stress responses to space radiation and partial gravity. The LEAF team includes Principal Investigator Christine Escobar, Space Lab CEO Adam Escobar, Space Lab Mechanical Engineer Madison Jones, and space biologists from NASA Kennedy Space Center (Dr. Aubrie O’Rourke, Dr. Gioia Massa, and Dr. Raymond Wheeler), University of Colorado at Boulder (Dr. Barbara Demmig-Adams), Purdue University (Dr. Marshall Porterfield), USDA (Dr. Gayle Volk), La Trobe University (Dr. Mathew Lewsey), and University of Adelaide (Dr. Jenny Mortimer). This work is under the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) Biomedical Research Advances for Space Health (BRASH).
August 30, 2018 NASA awarded Space Lab® a sub-orbital flight opportunity aboard the Blue Origin New Shepard! This flight opportunity is provided under the Space Technology Research, Development, Demonstration, and Infusion-2018 (SpaceTech-REDDI-2018) solicitation. The research is titled Microgravity Investigation for Thin Film Hydroponics, which will investigate a new form of passive nutrient and water delivery for plants in space.
